Azerath:
Hello and
greetings from Bulgaria! How are you and how are the things going in
Bavaria?
Geist:
Hails Azerath. How I am doing is not of
interest here. Everything goes downwards in Bavaria – just like in the
rest of the world, too.
Azerath:
Let’s continue
with a history of your band and your future plans.
Geist:
Klage der Nacht has envolved from a long
lasting comradeship between Todtenweiß and me. We have searched for a
way to create a platform for all the emotions of our shared experiences
in life. So it happened one night in winter 2005 that we had recorded in
our cellar a demo tape with the title “Klage der Nacht” – live and
primitive. Afterwards we handed out a few copies of that tape to some
people who were important for us. At first that should have been the
whole story and we hadn’t the intention to keep that project alive,
because at that time it should be something nonrecurring – we had what
we wanted, we had disburdened our souls.
But now, three years have
elapsed in which many things had happened. This caused us now in 2008 to
the decision to carry on with our project. Winter came over the country
and brought all his memories along, so we decided to work them up on the
tape “Dem Winter entgegen...” (“Towards winter...”).
I cannot tell you anything about
our future plans, because things will just happen and we will just
release a new record if we feel the urge to do it.
Azerath: How do you describe your style and what inspires you?
Geist:
Well, I would say we do primitive but very
authentic and melancholic Black Metal. Like above mentioned we are
inspired primarily of our shared incidents and challenges which we have
overcome – such as as just being a part of humanity or for example the
death of relied people. Also some everlasting sources of inspiration are
still the night as well as the woods and the spirits which indwell them.
Even a brief look up to the moon on the nightly sky lets thousands of
beautiful as well as painful thoughts rush into my mind.
Azerath:
There are a lot of
great bands from Germany and it’s not necessary to go into particulars,
every one knows them, but how do you see it, your local scene?
Geist:
Yes, I
think the German „scene“ is a very good one and you can see especially
here a lot of bands which serve the underground and the old values. But
here (as in every other country, too) thousands of unnecessary - and
worthless groups are growing next to the few jewels.
However, in my opinion a true and experienced black metaler is able to
unmask those useless scum bands. So the chaff will be soon or later
sorted from the wheat.
Azerath:
Tell to our readers something about your other projects?
Geist:
Together
with Klage der Nacht there exists also Ritus, which was founded together
with two talented comrades-in-arms in 2007 as a tribute to the spirits
of the night. Ritus should also be a ventile for our emotions, because
at that time it wasn’t sure that Todtenweiß and I would continue with
Klage der Nacht on day.
Opposed to Klage der Nacht, Ritus is a faster and more technical type of
black metal. Our work is inspired by misery, rituals, nightmares, occult
topics and - of course – also the night. The structures of the melodies
are from depressive to aggressive. So, after a while, our first demo
tape “Von nächtlichen Gedanken” (“Of nocturnal thoughts”) came into
existence. The tape was limited to a few copies and got great feedback –
what we were not excepting to be like that. So the tape was soon sold
out – but because there was still a demand on it, we stepped under the
banner of the German label Blutvergiessen Records which will produce a
re-release limited to 250 copies.
At
the moment we're working on our first full-length LP, whereby we will
take up many time. We won’t be one of those bands which flood the
underground with their mindless mass-productions. Quality instead of
quantity!!!
Azerath: What is different and what is
common between Klage der Nacht and the rest Black Metal bands?
Geist:
In our project
authenticity has priority. That’s why we record all melodies with Klage
der Nacht live with drums and guitar in our basement vault, only in
those nights in which we feel the urge to do so. Because of that, many
things are created spontaneously. These live-recordings allow it to keep
the spirit and the feelings that we were actually feeling in those
nights. So what you can hear on our tapes are real emotions which are
not falsified by technical experiments. I think that the authenticity
often gets lost in sparking clean studio production.
But
of course we have many similarities to other black metal bands. I think
we are not the first group which presents melancholic/monotone black
metal that's about death and winter. But it's certainly not our
intention to reinvent the wheel. Bands which try at all costs to be
innovative and to include curiosities that were never heard before just
want to attract as much attention as possible and become well-known, I
think. No – we do not want this. We want to remain faithful to our
roots. Our music isn’t something new, but it comes from heart – and this
is what it’s all about.
Azerath: How do you pick up this band name?
Geist:
Klage der Nacht
means something like „Lament of the Night”. We often walk through the
woods at night, whereby mostly a very special atmosphere arises. A
mixture of deliverance and misery. Deliverance because the forest
provides us silence and a resort - it allows us to stay away from other
human beings for a while. But misery comes upon us when we think about
what humanity is doing with this place. The woods are disappearing piece
by piece. Even a look up to the moon can’t convey comfort to me, because
I know – although it seems so impalpable far away – the pest called
humanity has already conquered even him. And the night can only watch
all that in sorrow, because she has no voice. That’s the reason we lent
the “Lament of the Night” our voice.
Azerath: What are your songs about and do you
think that the idea in your lyrics is more important than the music?
Geist:
Both – melodies and lyrics – are important for us.
Todtenweiß puts his soul into the melodies and I spend most of my
attention on the lyrics and the vocals. One completes the other. The
lyrics are mostly older entries of my diary that I wrote on different
occurrences. “Nur die Nacht weiß um ihr Leid” (“Only the night knows
about her grief”), for example, is dedicated to a friend of us who
killed herself in 2006. In that song I still can hear her crying in the
woods. She is damned to stay forever at the place of her death – as a
ghost. I can feel her presence between the trees, but I can’t see her.
And she can neither see me, nor feel or hear me – she’s all alone, a
ghost captive in the shadows, in some kind of a world between live and
death.
Azerath: Did you think about a split with any group?
Geist: Sternenfrost of the German one-man-project
Wedard asked us to work with him, because we know him well, so we will
surely do a split or something with him in the near future. We will meet
up this winter and talk about the whole concept. Of course there are a
lot of bands we like very much and which also like our work. But I think
you should (if possible) know the people behind the bands personally, if
you want to work with them – not only on the internet, like it is common
these days.
However, this is really hard for us, because we live on the countryside
and isolated from the “scene”, so here are no other Black Metal Bands.
Azerath:
Are you planning to perform live?
Geist:
At the
moment it seems to be no excitement for us to play in front of a
“bigger” audience. Our music isn’t made for being played for some
drunken idiots. However, we will play live one or two times next year –
but only in private party. We have some very atmospheric locations here,
for example the old ruin of a castle and the under croft of an ancient
cloister.
Azerath:
Do you know
something about Bulgaria, about our traditions and music?
What's
your opinion about webzines like TrueBlackMetal.Info?
Geist:
I don’t know much about
your homeland. I know that it verges on Turkey and that about 11 % of
the inhabitants come from there. This is why the Islam is entering your
country very rapid, although your country is still reigned by
Christianity. But I despise the Islam at least as much as Christianity –
it bears the same danger as Christianity and is maybe even more insane.
We should now start to attack this “new enemy”, too – not only
Christianity.
Due to the fact that I’m very interested in medieval times – and because
I play some medieval instruments myself – I know that Bulgaria is the
root of a lot of folkloristic things and traditions. The Kaval-flute and
the Gaida-bagpipe are still today the national instruments of your
country, as far as I know.
About
webzines I’m rather sceptic. To be honest, I prefer printed underground
magazines. At the moment there exist some of them in Germany – and some
of them are really honest and they don’t mince words. They don’t bow to
the stupid “political correctness”.
Azerath:
We are at the end
so thank you for the interview, if you want
to say something more now is the moment.
Geist:
Thank you for
beeing interested in Klage der Nacht.
What I would like to tell your readers is what I already
told you the question before: keep your eyes on the Islam! Germany
already starts to get conquered by the moslems. Mosques are built
everywhere... Do not just fix all your attention to Christianity! Fight
also the new, imminent danger – before it gets out of hand!
