Moonsorrow

Interview with Ville (Dominus, 06 February 2005)

Dominus vs. Ville Sorvali

Hail, Ville! Present yourself and the other guys from Moonsorrow!
Hail! I'm Ville Sorvali, the bass player and the vocalist of Moonsorrow. The rest of the guys are Henri Sorvali (guitars/keyboards), Marko Tarvonen (drums), Mitja Harvilahti (guitars) and Markus Euren (keyboards).

How do you define your style?
Epic, heathen, metal.

23 February is set to be a released date of your new album "Verisäkeet". Tell us something about it!
It's the most challenging album we've done, having only 5 tracks stretching over 70 minutes and taking a slight separture from the bombast of "Kivenkantaja". It's cold, raw and harsh; definitely Moonsorrow, but with more obvious black metal influences this time.

Who wrote the music and the lyrics for the album?
Henri and Marko wrote the music and I wrote the lyrics. It's a natural share of duties and works for us, nothing different from our previous albums.

Where does "Moonsorrow" comes from? What does the name symbolize?
The name actually comes from the old Celtic Frost song "Sorrows Of The Moon". Moon and sorrow are both strong words, and the combination of them can be linked with the Finnish nature and melancholic spirit.

What is your philosophy of life? What is your attitude to religion?
I am a pagan, and that defines how I view the world and how I look upon life. I aim to live in respect to nature and my ancestors. It is a religion, but definitely not in a strict, dogmatic sense. What comes to organised religions (like Christianity), people seemingly need them. Nothing wrong in that, but all of it has gone too far when you start killing other people in the name of your religion.

Tell us about the Finnish metal scene (we have an idea of course, haha)!
It's in a good shape, I think. We have many good bands here, and the international success of some has paved way for the smaller ones to build their foundation. We also have a healthy underground scene here, lots of bands who do hard work and honest music. I respect that.

Do you have any videoclips?
Yes, there are two videoclips on the reissue of "Suden Uni", and the other one can also be found from our website (www.moonsorrow.com). These are from the songs "Sankarihauta" and "Jumalten Kaupunki".

Are you thinking of new one?
We are not planning another video at the moment, time will tell.

What are your future plans? Would you experimentate or change your style?
We just finished with another album, so we don't know what will happen next. We won't start writing new material any day soon anyway. Don't know about experimenting, but we have never done a sequel for the previous album, so I guess the next one will contain some surprises also.

How do the things with concerts and tours stay? Could we hope to see you in Bulgaria soon?
At the moment we don't have that many shows booked, but of course I hope we could tour more. Keep checking the live calendar on our website for updates on the subject. Bulgaria would be cool, if there are any organisers, contact us!

What have you heard about Bulgaria? And about the Bulgarian metal scene?
Bulgaria is located by the Black Sea, neighbouring Greece, Serbia, Macedonia, Turkey and Romania. I have also heard that it is a beautiful country and certainly worth a visit. My knowledge of Bulgarian metal scene is very limited, I have only heard a few bands.

What would you wish to the Bulgarian true black metal fans?
Stay true to yourselves and never submit.

Thank you and good luck with Moonsorrow!
Thank you, thanks to the readers, it was a pleasure. Good luck in all that you do also!
